Dr. Becky Choma

Biography

Becky Choma is a Professor specializing in social and political psychology at Toronto Metropolitan University (TMU), where she directs the Social Political Psychology Lab. She completed her SSHRC-funded PhD in Social/Personality Psychology at Brock University and subsequently undertook a Postdoc. Before joining TMU in 2013, she worked as an Assistant Professor in the School of Psychology at the University of Plymouth in the UK. Her research focuses on the psychological and social factors that influence intergroup attitudes, prejudice, and discrimination. She examines the mechanisms that can reduce prejudice and foster equitable intergroup relations, studying issues related to social inequalities based on factors such as gender, race, ethnicity, religion, sexual orientation, and weight. With over 60 peer-reviewed articles and chapters, she has contributed significantly to the field, collaborating with numerous esteemed mentors and peers. Choma's work has received funding from various agencies, including SSHRC and CIHR, and she is recognized for her in-depth studies on socio-political ideologies and intergroup emotions.
