Biography

Behnam Jafarpour is a Professor of Chemical Engineering and Material Science, and also engages in Electrical and Computer Engineering, Civil and Environmental Engineering. He serves as the Director of the CO2-SMART Center, part of the National Science Foundation Industry-University Cooperative Research Center, dedicated to addressing industrial decarbonization research needs through CO2 sequestration. Additionally, he holds the role of Associate Director at the USC Ershaghi Center for Energy Transition, where he occupies the Energi Simulation Foundation's Industrial Research Chair in Subsurface Energy Data Science. Dr. Jafarpour earned his PhD from the Massachusetts Institute of Technology (MIT) in 2008. His research focuses on integrating machine learning with subsurface energy science and engineering to develop physics-informed artificial intelligence solutions for industrial applications. He is at the forefront of directing an interdisciplinary research lab at USC, which centers on combining deep learning algorithms with domain knowledge to manage complex, high-dimensional energy systems, aiming for effective prediction and control solutions. His efforts have garnered sponsorship from government, industry, and nonprofit foundations.
