Biography

Behnam Jafarpour is a Professor of Chemical Engineering and Materials Science, Electrical Computer Engineering, Civil Environmental Engineering. He is the Director of the CO2-SMART Center, a National Science Foundation (NSF) Industry-University Cooperative Research Center (IUCRC) aimed at addressing research needs in industrial decarbonization and CO2 sequestration. Additionally, he serves as the Associate Director of the USC Ershaghi Center for Energy Transition (E-CET) and holds the Energi Simulation Foundation's Industrial Research Chair in Subsurface Energy Data Science. He earned his PhD from the Massachusetts Institute of Technology (MIT) in 2008. His research focuses on the interface of machine learning and subsurface energy science engineering, developing physics-informed AI solutions for industrial applications. He directs an interdisciplinary research lab at USC, combining deep learning algorithms with domain knowledge of complex, high-dimensional energy systems to develop practical solutions for prediction, inference, and control systems. His research is sponsored by government, industry, and nonprofit foundations.
