Biography

Belinda Archibong is an Associate Professor at Johns Hopkins University School of Advanced International Studies (SAIS), where she co-leads the Development, Climate, Sustainability Focus Area. Her research primarily concentrates on development economics, political economy, economic history, and environmental economics, with a specific emphasis on African regional issues. Archibong’s work explores the role of historical institutions in influencing environmental inequality and access to public services, as well as the development of human capital in areas such as education, labor, and health. She investigates various topics including the effects of epidemics on human capital investment, gender gaps in education, and the economics of vaccination programs. Additionally, her research examines the impacts of air pollution and gas flaring on human capital outcomes, while focusing on how institutions can either mitigate or exacerbate the consequences of climate change and environmental inequalities, especially for marginalized groups. Archibong is also a Senior Fellow at the Global Economy and Development program at the Brookings Institution and has served as a Research Associate at the National Bureau of Economic Research (NBER). Previously, she was an Associate Professor of Economics at Barnard College, Columbia University, where her research has been published in numerous academic journals and cited by various media outlets, including NPR and Al Jazeera.
