Biography

Ben E. Black is the Eldridge Reeves Johnson Foundation Professor in the Department of Biochemistry and Biophysics at the Perelman School of Medicine, University of Pennsylvania. His lab is dedicated to understanding the mechanisms of chromosome segregation during cell division, particularly focusing on the centromere, a specific chromosomal element responsible for proper chromosomal alignment and separation in mitosis and meiosis. His research employs various approaches including biophysical, biochemical, genetic, and cell biological techniques to explore the composition and characteristics of proteins that interact with centromeric DNA. Recently, his lab has also investigated the enzyme PARP-1, which plays a critical role in the cellular response to DNA damage. The work aims to develop novel PARP inhibitors with therapeutic applications in cancer treatment and other diseases. With a PhD in Biochemistry and Molecular Genetics from the University of Virginia, Ben has authored numerous influential publications that advance the field of chromosome biology.
