Biography

Ben Bowers is an internationally recognized clinical academic community nurse who practices clinically as an Honorary Nurse Consultant in Palliative Care. He is the Deputy Theme Lead for the Palliative and End of Life Care theme at the NIHR ARC East England. In 2023, he has announced the significant impact of 75 nurses and midwives' work on the NHS's creation. He has been awarded the RCGP & SAPC Outstanding Early Career Researcher award as well as the 2024 European Association for Palliative Care Early Researcher Award, acknowledging his outstanding contributions to international palliative care and primary care research. Ben is a Fellow at the Queen’s Institute of Community Nursing and an Honorary Associate Professor at the University of Nottingham. He leads an interdisciplinary research program aimed at improving care for the dying at home. His Wellcome Early Career Award research investigates system factors involved in the safe and effective use of injectable symptom control medications, integrating social science, engineering design, and patient safety disciplines. Ben also researches person-centered end-of-life care within increasingly resource-constrained community healthcare systems, collaborating with colleagues in the UK to translate research findings into clinical practice and enhance research capacity in community healthcare. He co-founded and leads the UK-wide Community Nursing Research Forum, which currently has over 1000 community nurse members. Ben is committed to supporting early-career researchers and values interdisciplinary research and public engagement.
