Biography

Ben Coulson is a Lecturer in International Relations at the University of Edinburgh's School of Social and Political Science. He joined the university in September 2022 after serving as a Teaching Fellow in East Asian International Relations at Durham University and as a Lecturer in International Politics at Newcastle University. Coulson's research mainly focuses on the historical development of US-China relations from the mid-19th century to the present. He is also interested in broader topics related to contemporary foreign policy in East Asia and East Asian security, as well as the intersection of popular culture and politics. In addition to his research, he is involved in teaching and pedagogy in International Relations, organizing courses such as 'Politics in a Changing World' for the MA Dissertation course and honors courses in 'Geopolitics' and 'Sport and Politics.' He earned his PhD in International Relations from Newcastle University, with a dissertation titled 'Identity, Capital, Geopolitics: Presidential Discourses of China 1844-2016.'
