Ben Gaastra graduated from the University of Cambridge with a degree in medicine in 2013 and entered the Academic Foundation Programme in neurosciences. He began his neurosurgical training at University Hospital Southampton in 2015 and joined the University of Southampton in 2016 as a visiting academic, later becoming a Clinical Research Fellow. He is a founding member of the Haemoglobin InTracranial Haemorrhage (HATCH) consortium, with research interests focused on the outcomes of aneurysmal subarachnoid haemorrhage (aSAH), which he has published on in journals such as Nature Reviews Neurology and Stroke. His research employs multi-omic techniques to explore the pathophysiological mechanisms that influence the outcomes of aSAH. Gaastra has been involved in notable research projects exploring the sphingosine-1-phosphate signalling pathway and its impact on outcomes related to aSAH, alongside a metabolomic study of cerebrospinal fluid in aSAH patients and previous proteomic discovery studies.
