Ben Janssen born in Sittard, Netherlands in 1958. He completed his master's degree in Biology in 1983 at Nijmegen University, NL, and was trained in Pharmacology at Maastricht University, NL. In 1988, he received his PhD for his thesis on sensory renal nerves and hypertension. In 2003, he was appointed Associate Professor in the Department of Pharmacology & Toxicology at Maastricht University. Ben is a full member of the staff specializing in hypothesis testing in cardiovascular research questions involving in vivo experimental animals. He has (co)authored more than 150 research publications in the field, which can be viewed on PubMed. He supervises pharmacology and pharmacotherapy teaching programs within the Faculty of Health, Life Sciences and Medicine at Maastricht University and represents Maastricht University in the Dutch Pharmacological Society for national educational initiatives. His contributions to education were recognized when he received the Wynand Wijnen Teaching Award from Maastricht University in 2021. In 2019, he started a new research line focused on the potential ecotoxic effects of medicinal waste products present in wastewaters from hospitals to surface waters. In collaboration with Maastricht University Medical Center, regional and national water authorities, and national research institutes, he aims to address how healthcare institutions can optimally reduce emissions of selective medicines into the aquatic environment. Additionally, he is involved in initiatives that improve education for healthcare professionals on “greener” prescribing and developing tools for e-learning platforms such as Pscribe.
