Biography

Ben is a Research Fellow at Southampton's Law School, investigating parole decision-making within the parole process in England and Wales. His research explores the intersections of sociology, prisons, punishment, and moral philosophy, with a particular focus on the experiences of long-term prisoners and the implications of extreme punishments within the UK criminal justice system. Ben's interest in this field originated from his work with Fine Cell Work, a social enterprise that produces textile arts in prisons. This experience led to his research experiences with individuals serving long prison sentences, culminating in a doctorate jointly funded by the Economic and Social Research Council and the Quakers in Britain. He examined the ethical experiences of men imprisoned for murder, exploring how they negotiated the challenges of spending decades in prison while responding to the societal censure of their murder convictions. Having completed a Knowledge Exchange Fellowship with the Prison Reform Trust, Ben is now developing research on risk assessment frameworks and their moral implications in criminal justice. His work aims to bridge theoretical understanding and practical application in the field, fostering collaborations with researchers and practitioners in criminology, sociology, public policy, and law.
