Biography

Ben Lineton graduated from Imperial College London in 1986 with a degree in Mechanical Engineering. He spent a year as a visiting research student at the Swiss Federal Institute of Technology (ETH) Zurich, focusing on aerodynamics. Subsequently, he worked as an engineer in the Wind Energy Group, where his interest in noise and hearing developed. He took a year off industry to study for an MSc in Sound and Vibration at ISVR, Southampton. After graduating, he returned to industry as a noise control engineer for Rover Cars, where he worked on designing the new Mini. His curiosity about the mechanics of hearing led him back to ISVR to pursue a PhD on modeling the generation of otoacoustic emissions in the cochlea, which he completed in 2001. Following his PhD, he worked as a research scientist at the Institute of Hearing Research at the Royal South Hants Hospital, exploring new techniques to measure otoacoustic emissions. In 2004, he joined ISVR as a lecturer, teaching on Audiology and Acoustical Engineering programs. His research interests center around understanding the hearing system, particularly cochlear mechanics and the mechanisms generating otoacoustic emissions. Currently, he is focused on developing techniques for measuring hearing function, particularly in relation to high-frequency sound.
