Biography

Ben Moore joined the University of Amsterdam in 2017 as an Assistant Professor of English Literature. He previously taught at Cardiff University (2015-2016) and the University of Manchester (2011-2015). Moore completed his Bachelor’s degree in 2007, Master’s degree in 2010, and PhD in 2014. His research primarily focuses on themes of modernity, urban spaces, vision, and architecture in the context of nineteenth-century literature. He is the author of the upcoming monograph 'Invisible Architecture: Nineteenth-Century Literature and Rethinking Urban Modernity' (Edinburgh University Press, 2024), which is regarded for winning the 2025 ASCA Book Award. His scholarly work encompasses Victorian authors such as Charles Dickens and Elizabeth Gaskell, as well as critical frameworks involving the Anthropocene and issues related to money and space. Moore also engages in editorial work as a co-editor of the Gaskell Journal and serves as secretary for the Dickens Society. His teaching responsibilities include core and elective courses on nineteenth-century literature and contributions to various modules within the BA English Language and Culture program.
