Dr. Ben Spies Butcher

Biography

Ben Spies-Butcher is an Associate Professor at Macquarie University, specializing in the intersection of economy and society within the School of Communication, and Society and Culture. He is the Deputy Director of the Macquarie University Housing Urban Research Centre and co-director of the Australian Basic Income Lab. His research primarily focuses on political economy and social ecological policy, particularly how economic and political changes shape the welfare state and climate policy. He has extensive experience working in the non-government sector on human rights issues. Ben completed his PhD in Economics at the University of Sydney. His current research explores financial logics within the private sector and the corresponding impacts on social climate policy and public sector budgeting. Ben has contributed significantly to various scholarly publications and serves as an Area Editor for the Economic and Labour Relations Review. He is involved in several research collaborations, including projects that address Aboriginal-led solutions and the implications of climate economy strategies in Australia.
