Biography

Professor Ben Williams completed his undergraduate Master’s degree in 2005 followed by a doctorate in 2009 in the Department of Physics at the University of Oxford. He began his academic journey working to measure thermofluid systems using light. Before his current position in the Department of Engineering Science at the University of Oxford, he held a position in the Department of Mechanical Engineering at Imperial College London starting in 2014. Ben's research group focuses on the development and application of novel optical diagnostic techniques to thermofluids problems. These non-intrusive diagnostics enable measurement of system properties without disturbing the activity. His group offers insights in harsh environments where traditional probe hardware may not survive. They work closely with colleagues in research areas such as internal combustion engines, gas turbines, and hypersonics, producing highly precise measurements of critical properties like temperature, pressure, and flow velocity. Ben’s work significantly contributes to improving the efficiency and cleanliness of sustainable powertrains for the future.
