Biography

Benedetta Catanzariti is a British Academy Postdoctoral Fellow at the University of Edinburgh's School of Social and Political Science. She earned her PhD in Science, Technology, and Innovation Studies from the University of Edinburgh in 2023, following her MScRes in Science and Technology Studies from the same institution in 2019 and her Master’s in Philosophy from the University of Turin in 2016. Her research interests include the social studies of information and communication technologies, exploring the social, historical, and political dimensions of data and artificial intelligence, particularly how computing cultures shape knowledge within society. Through qualitative research methods, she investigates the classification practices that underpin algorithmic decision-making, emphasizing the historical and cultural contexts that influence claims of data-driven objectivity. Catanzariti's current project, 'Technology Translation', focuses on healthcare AI, examining the tensions between ambitions for scalable AI models and the practical experiences of clinicians and patients regarding datafication in healthcare. Her work has been recognized with awards including the Outstanding Dissertation Award from her school and the Andrew Webster PhD Prize from AsSIST-UK. She is actively involved in various research collaborations, aimed at understanding the epistemic dimensions of data and AI in relation to political economy and large computing infrastructures, and is a core member of the AI Ethics & Society network.
