Biography

Benedict Taylor is a Professor of Music Analysis and Philosophy at the Reid School of Music, University of Edinburgh. He was a Fellow at the Institute for Advanced Study in Berlin during 2019–20 and has received fellowships from the Alexander von Humboldt Stiftung and the Andrew W. Mellon Foundation. He is a recipient of the Jerome Roche Prize from the Royal Musical Association. Taylor is currently a co-editor of Music & Letters and a series editor for Cambridge University Press's Music Context series. He serves on the editorial boards of several prominent journals, including Music Analysis and Music Theory Spectrum. His research interests focus on late 18th to early 20th-century music, emphasizing temporality and subjectivity within music theory and analysis. He has authored seven monographs, including notable works on Mendelssohn and the philosophical study of music temporality. Taylor has also edited several significant volumes related to music of the Romantic period and has published broadly on topics ranging from 18th to 20th-century music in leading academic journals. His teaching includes various music analysis courses and supervision of undergraduate, Master's, and PhD students in topics related to music theory and history.
