Professor Beng Ti Tey joined the School of Engineering at Monash University Malaysia in 2011 and currently serves as the Head of the Chemical Engineering Department. He obtained his PhD in Chemical Engineering from Birmingham University in the UK in 2001 and became a Chartered Engineer with the Engineering Council, UK in 2011. Professor Tey is actively engaged in research and has published more than 150 journal papers in ISI journals. Over the past 20 years, he and his collaborators have secured a total of 50 research grants amounting to over RM 21.8 million. He is also the lead inventor on 10 patents filed under the Malaysia Patent Cooperation Treaty. Professor Tey has successfully supervised 30 PhD students, 25 master's theses, and over 130 undergraduate dissertations. His research areas encompass process development in biopharmaceutical production as well as microencapsulation for drug delivery and food applications. His group has made significant advancements in direct cell engineering approaches to enhance apoptosis and cell proliferation, thereby improving cell lines of biopharmaceutical importance. Additionally, he has successfully produced and purified virus-like particles (VLPs) through innovative methodologies. Professor Tey is a Subject Editor for the journal Food Bioproducts Processing and his expertise relates to the UN Sustainable Development Goals established in 2015. His research interests include bioseparation, smart materials, microencapsulation, and food engineering.
