Biography

Bengt Steen has a PhD in chemical engineering from Chalmers University of Technology, which he obtained in 1975. He has been employed at the Swedish Environmental Research Institute since 1968 as an environmental scientist and has held various positions since 1996. Steen joined Chalmers as an adjunct professor and has contributed significantly to the field of Environmental Systems Analysis and Technology Management Economics. His research initially focused on measurement techniques, and in the 1980s, he shifted his emphasis to the mechanisms of generation and impacts of air pollutants. In the 1990s, his research concentrated on Environmental Life Cycle Assessments (LCA), where he developed an interest in the monetary valuation of environmental impacts. He played a crucial role in developing the EPS system, a tool for product development in LCA. Furthermore, Steen has been active in the International Organization for Standardization (ISO) to create international standards for LCA and eco-efficiency, specifically regarding the monetary valuation of environmental impacts. In recognition of his outstanding achievements in LCA, he received the SETAC Europe Lifetime Award in 2012.
