Biography

Dr. Benjamin Alman is a clinical scientist in orthopaedic surgery with a focus on understanding the developmental processes involved in pathological conditions of the musculoskeletal system. His research aims to utilize this knowledge to identify improved therapeutic approaches for orthopaedic disorders. He employs genetically modified mouse models to uncover new drug therapies for musculoskeletal tumors. Notably, Dr. Alman has generated novel mice to study tumors and reparative processes, identifying key subpopulations of tumor-initiating cells and their role in sarcomas. His work has demonstrated the importance of the ß-catenin signaling pathway in fracture repair and delineated the roles of macrophages in this process. An active principal investigator on several NIH grants, Dr. Alman has published over 175 peer-reviewed articles in prestigious journals such as Lancet, Cell, and Nature Medicine, and has supervised 30 graduate and postdoctoral trainees. He joined Duke University in 2013 from the University of Toronto, where he held the Latner Professorship and served as Vice Chair of the Department of Surgery.
