Biography

Benjamin Anderson is an Associate Professor in the Department of History of Art and Visual Studies at Cornell University. His research focuses on the cultures of the Mediterranean from antiquity to the present, with particular emphasis on Byzantine art. His notable book, 'Cosmos Community Early Medieval Art,' explores the reception of ancient astronomical imagery in Byzantine, Frankish, and early Islamic states. He has received the Charles Rufus Morey Book Award from the College Art Association and the Karen Gould Prize from the Medieval Academy of America. Anderson's ongoing projects include a book-in-progress regarding the reception of Byzantine 'Oracles of Leo' in early modern Europe. He is also interested in the history of Constantinople, having contributed to edited volumes on Hagia Sophia and urban studies. His research has been supported by fellowships from prestigious institutions such as the Center for Advanced Study in the Visual Arts and the Deutsche Akademische Austauschdienst. He has served as the Director of Graduate Studies in the Department and held leadership positions in the Byzantine Studies Association of North America.
