Benjamin studied English Political Science as an undergraduate at the University of Virginia and completed his doctorate in 2009. He served as the director of the Center for the Study of Genders and Sexualities at California State University, Los Angeles, before joining the University of Edinburgh in 2018 as a lecturer in post-1900 British literature. Benjamin currently leads the judging for the James Tait Black Prize for Fiction and coordinates the Read Novel massive open online course, along with directing learning and teaching for the School of Literatures, Languages, and Cultures. His primary research interests include modern and contemporary literature, queer theory, and environmental humanities. His books, such as "Modernist Art and Queer Survival" (2017) and "Queer Disappearance in Modern Contemporary Fiction" (2023), critically engage with subjectivities shaped by queerness and explore narratives of survival. For his ongoing research, Benjamin is currently leading a project examining representations of pandemics in literature, funded by the British Academy/Leverhulme.
