Biography

Dr. Benjamin Brennan is a Senior Lecturer specializing in Virology at the University of Glasgow. His research is primarily focused on understanding bunyaviruses transmitted by vectors to mammals and how these viruses overcome the immune defenses of host arthropods. He employs both in vitro and in vivo molecular virology studies to address these critical questions. Dr. Brennan is a member of the Bunyavirus Group and has been involved in developing a reverse genetics system for the newly discovered severe fever thrombocytopenia syndrome virus (SFTSV), as well as researching Oropouche (OROV), Rift Valley fever (RVFV), and Uukuniemi (UUKV) viruses. His research specifically examines interactions between arthropod-transmitted viruses and their vectors, the replication of these viruses in arthropod cell lines, the roles of viral proteins in infection, molecular determinants of virus tropism, and developing attenuated viruses for potential use as live-attenuated vaccines. Dr. Brennan's work contributes significantly to addressing global zoonotic threats and the development of innovative viral control strategies.
