Biography

Benjamin Brose is a Professor specializing in Buddhist Chinese Studies at the University of Michigan's LSA Asian Languages and Cultures. He earned his MA from the University of California, Berkeley, and his Ph.D. from Stanford University in 2009. His research focuses on the cultural history of Chinese Buddhism, particularly in the late nineteenth to mid-twentieth century. He has written extensively on the histories, doctrines, and practices of Chan Buddhism, as well as topics like transregional Buddhist exchange, narrative confluences, pilgrimage, and popular religion. Brose's teaching encompass a variety of courses at both undergraduate and graduate levels, including 'Introduction to Buddhism', 'Zen Buddhism: History, Culture, Critique', and 'Buddhism in America'. His research has been supported by numerous prestigious foundations including the Dan David Prize and the Guggenheim Memorial Foundation. Currently on research leave until fall 2026, he continues to contribute significantly to the field of Buddhist studies.
