Biography

Benjamin Bross’s research focuses on placemaking and the ways spatial production processes generate unique spaces that embody location’s physical conditions, sociocultural practices, collective memory, and economic activities. His research combines architecture, urbanism, and material culture, as well as phenomenology to examine spatial qualities. His book, 'Mexico City’s Zócalo: History Constructed Spatial Identity' (Routledge, UK, 2021), examines the evolution of this important public space. He also co-authored 'University of Illinois Memorial Stadium: 100 Years' (Routledge, UK, 2024), documenting the historical significance of social, economic, and political impacts of built environments. Recent honors include the Israel Institute’s Faculty Development Grant (2024) and the Levenick iSEE Teaching Sustainability Fellowship (UIUC, 2022-23). He is a licensed architect and has worked professionally in design, construction, and development across 75 projects in eight countries over 30 years.
