Biography

Benjamin Butterfield studied voice with Selena James at the Victoria Conservatory of Music and the Banff Centre for Arts and Creativity. He graduated from McGill University and was awarded grants from the Canada Council for the Arts to study in the USA, UK, and Italy. He has been recognized by the Sullivan Foundation and the Oratorio Society of New York, and was a participant in the Steans Vocal Institute at the Ravinia Festival in Chicago. Alongside his tenure at the University of Victoria, Benjamin maintains an active singing career represented by Schwalbe & Partners in New York. His performance highlights include appearances in Handel’s Tamerlano at Glimmerglass Opera under legendary stage director Jonathan Miller, as well as performances at the Montreal Jazz Festival and with the Hadyn’s Creation at Carnegie Hall. He has regularly performed with notable organizations and has been featured on CBC Radio. Previously, he served on the faculty at York University in Toronto and taught at various music festivals across Canada and abroad, impacting many upcoming singers. Benjamin has recorded multiple albums, including works by Galicians II, and has notable recordings under labels such as Analekta and Koch International. He also enjoys a diverse repertoire, having performed in operas such as Rossini's Barber of Seville and Mozart’s Magic Flute.
