Biography

Benjamin Brandt Christiansen is a PhD fellow at the University of Copenhagen, particularly in the Faculty of Theology's Church History Section. His research focuses on Danish history during the 17th to 19th centuries, with a keen interest in the interplay between church history and social history. He is currently working on his PhD project titled "Managing Furious Insanity: Hospital Cell Confinement Alternatives in Eighteenth-Century Denmark", which will be defended on June 4, 2025. This project is supported by the Augustinus Foundation and the Velux Foundation, and it examines church institutions and the involvement of local parish pastors in managing mentally afflicted individuals during that era. Besides his project, Christiansen's academic pursuits encompass the history of psychiatry, mental disorders, and various aspects of cultural history related to mental illness. He has actively participated in numerous lectures, conferences, and workshops, contributing to the discourse surrounding mental health and historical approaches to care, particularly in early modern Denmark.
