Dr. Benjamin Dowling

Biography

Benjamin Dowling is a Senior Lecturer in Cryptography at King's College London, joining the institution in August 2024. Previously, he served as a Lecturer in Cybersecurity at the University of Sheffield, where he led the Advanced Systems Research Group. Benjamin has held postdoctoral researcher positions in the Applied Cryptography group at ETH Zurich and the Information Security Group at Royal Holloway, University of London, collaborating with renowned expert Kenny Paterson. He received his PhD from the Queensland University of Technology, specializing in provable security for internet protocols. His research interests include real-world applications of cryptography, particularly in provable security, key exchange, and secure messaging, as well as post-quantum protocols. His research group focuses on the design, modeling, analysis, and verification of networks and systems. Notably, he explored vulnerabilities in WhatsApp that were discovered a decade ago, highlighting the importance of security in modern communication tools.
