Biography

Benjamin Swallow Duke, born in Louisville, Kentucky and raised in Utah, studied Literature, Philosophy, and Art at the University of Utah, where he received his Bachelor of Fine Arts in 2002. He earned his Master of Fine Arts at the Maryland Institute College of Art in Baltimore at the Hoffberger School of Painting. Duke began teaching painting and drawing at Michigan State University in 2006. He has participated in numerous solo and group shows at national and international levels, including exhibitions at the Fitton Art Center in Hamilton, Ohio, and the Kuandu Museum of Fine Art in Taipei, Taiwan. His work has been represented since 2006 by the Ann Nathan Gallery, a well-respected contemporary realism gallery in downtown Chicago. Duke has been awarded international residencies at the Bamboo Curtain Studios in Taiwan and at the Kuandu Museum of Fine Art, and has published a catalogue titled 'Benjamin Duke 2001-2010: Ten Years Work.' In 2020, he completed a significant mural project measuring 16ftx90ft in Leslie, MI. His work highlights the creative vitality within academic contexts and engages with broader public art projects.
