Biography

Benjamin Friedman is the William Joseph Maier Professor of Political Economy at Harvard University, where he joined the faculty in 1972. He has extensively written on economic policy, particularly regarding the role of financial markets in shaping monetary and fiscal policies and their effects on overall economic activity. His research interests include the effects of government deficits and surpluses on interest rates and exchange rates, business investment strategies, and guidelines for U.S. monetary policy. Friedman has authored or edited eleven books, aimed primarily at economists and economic policymakers, and written over a hundred articles covering topics in monetary economics, macroeconomics, and fiscal policy, many published in leading journals. He is also a frequent contributor to publications aimed at a broader audience, notably the New York Review of Books. In addition to his academic work, Friedman has held various leadership roles including serving as a director of the Private Export Funding Corporation, a trustee of Pioneer Funds, and a director of the National Council on Economic Education. He received his A.B., A.M., and Ph.D. degrees in economics from Harvard University and holds an M.Sc. in economics and politics from King's College, Cambridge.
