Benjamin Gantenbein is a Molecular Biologist at the University of Bern focusing on basic and applied research in the field of the spinal motional segment. He leads the Tissue & Organ Mechanobiology (TOM) Group at the Institute of Surgical Technology and Biomechanics (ISTB), where his current research emphasizes intervertebral disc repair through the use of biomaterial scaffolds and mesenchymal stem cells. He embarked on his academic journey at the University of Bern, obtaining his Master of Science and PhD degrees at the Computational and Molecular Population Genetics (CMPG) laboratory. Throughout his career, he has received fellowships from prestigious programs such as the Swiss National Science Foundation and the Marie Curie IHP substitute, concentrating on animal molecular evolutionary rates at the Institute of Evolutionary Biology, University of Edinburgh. He further expanded his expertise at Cambridge University, where he focused on recombination in animal mitochondria. Professor Gantenbein has a substantial background in intervertebral disc research, developed during his time at the AO Research Institute in Davos, where he gained knowledge in modern concepts of tissue engineering and regenerative medicine. In addition to his research, he teaches various courses, including Principles of Human Medicine, Tissue Engineering, and regenerative medicine at the University of Fribourg.
Part of the Swiss Joint Master in Computer Science (Bern, Fribourg, Neuchâtel).
