Biography

Benjamin Gianni is an Associate Professor at the Azrieli School of Architecture & Urbanism, Carleton University. His teaching focus includes housing and urban history, where he leads the housing studio in the 4th year BAS program and coordinates the urbanism major. His research interests are centered on housing and urban development, particularly exploring public housing constructed in the decades following World War II in Europe and North America, as well as the redevelopment of these areas since the 1990s. He also investigates urbanization and suburbanization, emphasizing large-scale housing ensembles in contemporary China, challenging the legacy of modernism in different cultural and temporal contexts. Furthermore, he studies the redevelopment of informal settlements in China, India, and Africa, aiming to develop adaptable, culturally resonant, and market-friendly design approaches for these communities. Gianni is also finalizing a book focused on pre-Second World War suburbanization in Pittsburgh, PA.
