Biography

Benjamin L. Liebman is the Robert L. Lieff Professor of Law at Columbia Law School and serves as the Vice Dean for Intellectual Life. He leads the Hong Yen Chang Center for Chinese Legal Studies, where he prepares students for leadership roles in the legal landscape of China. A renowned scholar in contemporary Chinese law, his research examines various aspects of the Chinese judicial system, including court judgments, the impact of artificial intelligence and big data, tort law, and criminal procedure. Liebman's work also spans topics such as leniency in criminal law and medical dispute resolution, along with securities markets. His significant publication, "Regulating Visible Hand: Institutional Implications of Chinese State Capitalism" (Oxford University Press, Curtis J. Milhaupt, 2015), addresses the role of state intervention in China's economy. Before joining Columbia’s faculty in 2002, he worked at Sullivan & Cromwell in London and Beijing and served as a law clerk for Justice David Souter and Judge Sandra Lynch on the 1st Circuit.
