Biography

Benjamin Pohl is a Professor of Medieval History at the University of Bristol, where he has been since 2015. He completed his PhD at the University of Bamberg and has held academic positions in Bamberg, Cambridge, and Ghent. His research interests primarily focus on medieval European history and historiography, particularly manuscript studies, palaeography, codicology, and cultural memory. Currently, he is researching professional scribes' networks in the medieval English countryside, covering the period c. 1100–1350. He has co-edited the series 'Bristol Studies in Medieval Cultures' and serves on the editorial board of the peer-reviewed, open-access journal 'Tabularia: Sources écrites des mondes normands médiévaux.' He is an elected Fellow of the Royal Historical Society and the Higher Education Academy and is involved with the Arts and Humanities Research Council Peer Review College. His major publications include 'Aynho Cartulary Documentary Culture: Study, Text, Translation' (Boydell, 2025) and 'Abbatial Authority Writing History Middle Ages' (Oxford University Press, 2023).
