Biography

Professor Benjamin E. R. Snyder received a B.S. in Chemistry and a B.A. in Mathematics from the University of Rochester in 2012. He earned his Ph.D. from Stanford University in 2018, where he was an NSF Graduate Fellow and Stanford Graduate Fellow. Following this, he moved to UC Berkeley in 2019 as an Arnold O. Beckman Postdoctoral Fellow before starting his independent career in the Department of Chemistry at the University of Illinois in 2023. His research focuses on the intersection of inorganic, physical, and materials chemistry, with a primary goal of developing spectroscopically-guided synthetic approaches for the installation of well-defined, molecular active sites in porous materials. This includes the exploration of porous supports such as zeolites and metal-organic frameworks that bind transition metal centers, resulting in active sites with unusual reactivity and physical properties. His targeted applications involve lattice-constrained active sites in heterogeneous catalysis, CO2 conversion, remediation of toxic ions, and quantum information science. Through his research, trainees gain expertise in various inorganic spectroscopies, materials synthesis, and density functional theory calculations.
