Biography

Ben Weiss joined the Department of Earth, Atmospheric and Planetary Sciences (EAPS) faculty at the Massachusetts Institute of Technology (MIT) in 2004 and currently serves as the Chair of the Program in Planetary Science. He studied physics at Amherst College before pursuing planetary science and geology at the California Institute of Technology, earning his master's degree in 2001 and PhD in 2003. Ben’s doctoral dissertation focused on the Martian meteorite ALH 84001, providing insights into the ancient Martian climate and magnetic field, and evidence that meteorites can transfer materials from Mars to Earth. He is known for his key contributions to understanding the history of the solar system, including discoveries related to early nebular magnetic fields, the Moon's core dynamo, and the core dynamos of asteroids. In addition to his leadership roles in the NASA Psyche mission, Mars Perseverance, and Europa Clipper missions, Ben is part of the science teams for SpaceIL Beresheet, JAXA Hayabusa 2, and ESA Rosetta missions.
