Biography

Benjamin White is a historian specializing in the modern Middle East, with a focus on refugees and statelessness. His research examines the historical context of refugees during the French mandate in Syria and Lebanon, as well as the British mandate in Iraq. A significant aspect of his doctoral work dealt with the emergence of the concept of 'minority' in Syria and the processes of modern state formation during a critical period in history. He is particularly interested in the intersection of human displacement and the natural environment, leading to projects on the role animals play in refugee camps. White is also affiliated with the Glasgow Refugee, Asylum, Migration Network, where he has initiated various interdisciplinary projects, including a study of the Baquba refugee camp established by the British military in Iraq from 1918 to 1921. He teaches postgraduate courses focusing on refugees and their historical significance and contributes to numerous academic modules on the history of the Middle East.
