Dr. Benjamin Zyla

Biography

Benjamin Zyla is a full professor in the School of International Development and Global Studies at the University of Ottawa, where he directs the Peacebuilding and Local Knowledge Network (PLKN) and co-directs the Gender, Peace, Development research network. His academic specialization encompasses political science, focusing on peacebuilding in fragile, conflict-affected societies, post-conflict reconstruction, and the dynamics of collective action in international security organizations. He has held teaching and research positions at prestigious institutions including Harvard University, Stanford University, and the Institute for Advanced Study in Germany. Zyla's research has significantly influenced our understanding of humanitarian interventions, global governance, and the complex challenges of failed states, particularly in relation to recent conflicts in Afghanistan, Libya, and Mali. He has received recognition for his contributions to the field, including the Young Researcher Award from the Faculty of Social Sciences at the University of Ottawa in 2017. He is actively involved in supervising graduate students and has published extensively on topics related to international relations and security studies.
