Biography

Bennett Goldberg is a Professor in the Department of Physics and Astronomy at Northwestern University, where he also serves as the Faculty Director of the Program Evaluation Core. He completed his B.A. at Harvard College in 1982 and his M.S. and Ph.D. in Physics at Brown University in 1984 and 1987, respectively. Before joining Northwestern in August 2016, he held various positions at Boston University, where he was a Professor in several departments, including Biomedical Engineering and Electrical and Computer Engineering. His research interests encompass nano-optics, spectroscopy of two-dimensional crystals, strain and friction in single-atom-thick layers, and innovative teaching methods in STEM. Goldberg has built a strong foundation in developing partnerships to enhance faculty and student engagement in reflective and student-centered learning. He has led significant projects in teaching innovation scholarship and has been instrumental in initiatives that support marginalization and minoritization in STEM. His work includes the development of massive open online courses (MOOCs) for PhD students and postdocs, and he has delivered keynotes across Latin America, advocating for active learning in engineering education.
