Biography

Berenice Verhelst is an Assistant Professor specializing in Ancient Greek at the University of Amsterdam. She completed her Master’s degree in 2009 and her PhD in 2014 at the University of Ghent. Her academic work predominantly focuses on the Greek and Latin epic, with particular expertise in Late Antiquity, especially the epics of Nonnus of Panopolis from the 5th century AD. She employs methods from narratology, genre studies, and ancient rhetoric to analyze the differences in style and structure between Late Antique and Archaic Classical epic poetry. Berenice is the co-director of the Digital Humanities project DICES, which integrates narratology with digital methodologies. She has published extensively, including a significant doctoral research project on direct speech in the Dionysiaca, released in 2017 by Brill. Additionally, she has editorial roles in several important works related to Greek and Roman poetry during Late Antiquity.
