Biography

Berenike Jung completed her PhD in Film and Television Studies at the University of Warwick in 2016. Her dissertation was developed into a monograph published by Edinburgh University Press in 2020 titled 'Invisibilities of Political Torture: Presence and Absence in Chilean Cinema and Television'. This book analyzes the representation of torture committed during the Iraq War and the Pinochet dictatorship in Chile, utilizing a diverse range of materials, such as photographs, nonfiction films, and television series, to demonstrate how audiovisual texts can convey the emotional and collective consequences of torture. Before joining the faculty at the University of Southampton, Berenike was a Lecturer in Film Studies at King's College London, the University of Tübingen, and the University of Groningen. She is committed to the ethical practice of film studies and advancing film education. Berenike has organized a roundtable on decolonizing the film media studies curriculum and co-authored an essay titled 'Decolonizing Film Studies' for the Film Education Journal, which reflects her experiences in teaching Global Film modules. Her current research focuses on the ethical and political questions that arise in audiovisual representations of violent conflict, trauma, and memory within transnational paradigms while also exploring decolonizing movements in film theory and education.
