Biography

Inspired by sociologist Pierre Bourdieu and philosopher Michel Foucault, Bernard Bernier developed a unique and critical perspective interlinking economy, politics, history, and culture. He has focused on the issue of labor, critically examining Japan's history as a projection of the past onto contemporary circumstances. To better understand Japan's contemporary economic history, he looked at its historical evolution, from the labor codes of the Edo period (1600-1867) to the aftermath of the 1990s financial crisis. Bernier's work and writings have gained international recognition. His work on Japan, published in three volumes, provides an essential analysis of contemporary Japan. He has contributed significantly to advancing knowledge in social sciences, through academic interventions and media engagements that have helped Quebecers comprehend Japanese society better. A compelling communicator, Bernier has attracted a large audience of students and colleagues across North America, Europe, and Japan. His oratory skills have led to numerous invitations to media programs and contributions to studies for the Quebec Ministry of Communications and the Museum of Civilizations. He continues to make exceptional contributions to the training of students and to the opening of Quebec society, having mentored nearly 500 students and researchers from Quebec, Japan, and France at various academic levels, sharing his unique approach to the study of social dynamics.
