Biography

Dr. Bernard Brais is a neurologist and co-director of the Rare Neurological Diseases group at the Montreal Neurological Institute Hospital. He completed his MDCM, Neurology residency, and PhD at McGill University. Dr. Brais, trained in the fields of neuroscience and genetics, focuses largely on the genetic basis of neurogenetic disorders and the founder effects observed in Quebec. His research has increasingly concentrated on disorders with ataxic manifestations, particularly Autosomal Recessive Spastic Ataxia Charlevoix-Saguenay (ARSACS). In 2007, he led a team of researchers investigating ARSACS, and has played significant roles in identifying causal genes associated with various conditions including Oculopharyngeal muscular dystrophy, Hereditary Sensory Autonomic Neuropathy type II, and Limb Girdle Muscular Dystrophy Quadriceps atrophy. His expertise lies in rare neurological diseases.
