After dedicating around 25 years to the study of primate behavior, I am now focusing my research on the contribution of primatology to the study of the origins and biological bases of human behavior. My particular interest lies in the biological evolution of the deep structure of human societies, the human reproductive system, social phenomena related to kinship, political power, and economic competition. I explore questions such as whether there are human universals, defined as common and recurring properties of phenomena that are both biological and cultural. While many cultural anthropologists have rejected the idea that the countless variants of human culture could rest on natural and universal laws, I am convinced otherwise.
