Biography

Trained in Montpellier, France, as a facial and cervical surgeon, Bernard Charlin holds a master's degree in education from Harvard University and a PhD in education from Maastricht University. He is a full professor in the Department of Surgery at the Université de Montréal and a member of the Centre for Applied Pedagogy in Health Sciences (CPASS) within the Faculty of Medicine at UdeM. His research focuses on reasoning in situations of uncertainty, emphasizing theory, acquisition, and evaluation. He is the creator of the concepts of Script Concordance and Training by Concordance. He has written or co-authored over 140 peer-reviewed articles and co-founded the international journal Medical Pedagogy and the Francophone International Society of Medical Education (SIFEM). In recognition of his contributions to medical education, he received the Duncan-Graham Award from the Royal College of Physicians and Surgeons of Canada in 2015. His work has significantly impacted medical education and health professional training in Canada and abroad.
