Bernard Debarbieux is a full professor of political and cultural geography and land planning at the University of Geneva. His research is mainly associated with the Department of Geography and the Environment and the Institute of Environmental Sciences, particularly through the Environmental Governance and Territorial Development Institute. His research combines a theoretical approach to social imaginaries of space with an empirical analysis of land planning practices, especially in mountainous regions, and the process of heritage making, especially within international organizations. Current research focuses on the relevance of social imaginaries of mountains and the historical and practical uses of the concept of 'world heritage' in international organizations. He is also the director of the master's program in Innovation, Human Development, and Sustainability (IHDS).
