Biography

Bernard Leckning is a Postdoctoral Fellow at the Black Dog Institute and is currently pursuing a PhD in Public Health Epidemiology at the Menzies School of Health Research. His research primarily focuses on advancing the epidemiological clinical understanding of suicidal behaviors to inform prevention strategies. Bernard is involved in the Crisis Aftercare stream of the Centre for Research Excellence in Suicide Prevention (CRESP-II), aiming to develop programs that enhance suicide safety planning in Australia. He has considerable experience using linked data to identify prevention opportunities throughout the lifecourse and evaluate large-scale interventions targeting vulnerable groups such as children, young people, and Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander peoples. Bernard previously worked in various clinical and community-based settings, including hospitals and primary health care services, and continues to collaborate with several research and governmental organizations to investigate health and social outcomes for children and young people in the Northern Territory. His engagement with the Child Youth Development Research Partnership (CYDRP) further emphasizes his commitment to utilizing large repository linked administrative data for impactful research in behavioral and mental health outcomes.
