Bernard Roelen studied Biology at Utrecht University and subsequently performed his PhD study at the Hubrecht Institute, Utrecht under the supervision of Christine Mummery. After obtaining his PhD, he was appointed as a junior researcher at the institute and worked as a postdoctoral fellow at Massachusetts General Hospital/Harvard Medical School in Boston, USA. Upon returning to the Netherlands, he served as a postdoctoral researcher at the Netherlands Cancer Institute in Amsterdam. In 2003, he became an Assistant Professor and in 2010, an Associate Professor in the Department of Farm Animal Health at the Faculty of Veterinary Medicine, Utrecht University. His research focuses on mammalian germ cells, early embryos, and stem cells, leading to over 70 scientific publications. He co-authored the book ‘Stamcellen’ in Dutch and its English updated version ‘Stem Cells’. His current research investigates the life cycle of placental mammals from oocyte ovulation to fertilization and the processes involved in cell maturation and differentiation. Collaboration with other researchers enhances the scope of his work in understanding developmental potency in early embryos and stem cells.
