Bernhard von Stengel is a Professor of Mathematics at the London School of Economics, where he joined in 1998. He has held postdoctoral positions at Berkeley and ETH Zurich. He obtained MSc degrees in Mathematics and Computer Science from Aachen and Austin, Texas, and received his PhD in Mathematics from Passau, followed by a Habilitation in Computer Science from Munich. He has served as a guest professor at the Hausdorff Institute in Bonn and the Simons Institute for Theory of Computing in Berkeley. His teaching includes introductory courses in mathematics, computing, optimization, and game theory; he has supervised seven PhD dissertations in game theory. His research focuses on mathematical and computational questions of game theory, particularly the structure of computation of equilibria in games. He has developed methods for solving imperfect-information games, such as poker, enabling optimal play in games with millions of decision points. He is also interested in discrete computational geometry, online computation, and utility theory. Von Stengel has been a Council member and Fellow of the Game Theory Society and served as its Vice-President for Communications from 2006 to 2014. He is an area editor for the journal Mathematics of Operations Research and co-editor of the International Journal of Game Theory. He has organized numerous international conferences and workshops in game theory, including the 2016 World Congress of the Game Theory Society.
