Professor Dr. Bert Holland

Biography

Bert Holland was a cherished professor in the Department of Chemistry at Brock University, remembered for his soft-spoken nature and impactful teaching. Born in Bolton, UK, he attended Canon Slade School before earning his degree in Chemistry from the University of Cambridge. He continued his education with an MSc from the University of Warwick and a PhD from Queen’s University Belfast, where he worked under the eminent Professor Henbest. Holland was involved in research as a postdoctoral fellow and teaching fellow at McMaster University. He had a diverse research portfolio, dedicating his efforts to biotransformations and making significant contributions to the understanding of microbial systems and enzyme-based chemical transformations. In addition to authoring over 120 papers and more than 30 reviews and book chapters, Holland was an advocate of Green Chemistry, collaborating closely with Dr. Paul Anastas from the White House Office of Science & Technology. His legacy continues to inspire his students and the broader scientific community.
