Bert Meijer studied chemistry at the University of Groningen and obtained his master's degree in 1978. He earned a PhD degree summa cum laude in 1982 under the supervision of Prof. Hans Wijnberg. Meijer began his career at Philips Research Laboratories in Eindhoven in 1982 and then moved to DSM Research in Geleen in 1989. In 1991, he became a full professor of Organic Chemistry at the Department of Chemical Engineering and Chemistry at Eindhoven University of Technology (TU/e). He established the chair of the department of Biomedical Engineering in 1999. In 2004, he was appointed as a distinguished university professor of Molecular Sciences at TU/e and was a co-director of the TU/e Institute Complex Molecular Systems founded in 2008. Meijer has served as an adjunct professor of Macromolecular Chemistry at Radboud University Nijmegen since 1994 and as a distinguished visiting professor at the University of California, Santa Barbara in 2008. In 2014, he was inducted as an Academy Professor by the Royal Netherlands Academy of Arts and Sciences, and in 2018, he became an external member of the scientific staff of the Max-Planck Institute for Polymer Research in Mainz, Germany. His research focuses on understanding how molecules work together to create the simplest forms of life in the laboratory.
